ALESUND
MOUNTAINS & FJORDS
MEET THE OCEAN
Ålesund is the cultural centre of the Sunnmøre region. The far northern port of Ålesund might be far from the bright lights of metropolitan Norway, but it's rich with some of the country's finest examples of Jugendstil (art nouveau) architecture – a legacy of a huge rebuilding project that took place after a devastating fire in 1904. Set out over a hook-shaped peninsula, the town is now the home base for Norway's largest cod-fishing fleet, and it's an attractive, lively town and unsurprisingly offers fresh, world-class seafood that will take you on a delicious gastronomic journey. Not to forget to hike up to Mount Aksla viewpoint, where you'll be rewarded with an incredible view over the city and the surrounding mountains.
TROLLSTIGEN VIEWPOINT
WILD MOUNTAINOUS LANDSCAPE
Trollstigen, the road 63, is a part of the Norwegian Scenic Route; Geiranger - Trollstigen. Driving Trollstigen is a dramatic and exciting experience. The road twists through 11 hairpin bend as it climbs up to Stigrøra (858 metres above sea level). At top of Trollstigen, there are viewpoints and steel walkways that allow you to get close to the dramatic mountains and waterfalls. Walkways and platforms lead to the edge where you can admire the views across the valley and feel the rush of standing 200 meters above the ground. The service building houses a café with panoramic windows, a souvenir shop and toilets. The Trollstigen Plateau and the two spectacular viewpoints that provide a full overview of the countryside, is designed by Reiulf Ramstad Architects. Everything is built in steel and glass and provides good protection against rough weather. The structure is designed so that it blends in with the surroundings, some parts are carved into the rock, while other parts are built on stone walls.
THE FLÅM RAILWAY
BREATHTAKING TRAIN JOURNEY
The Flåm Railway has been described as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world and is one of the leading tourist attractions in Norway. Over the course of one hour, the 20km long Flam Railway between Flam and Myrdal offer views to spectacular nature, historical cultural landscapes and extreme engineering skills. From the comfort of a vintage train compartment, you can enjoy the changing scenery of the Flåm Valley. Before ascending into the more impassable sections of the valley, the train runs through agricultural landscapes, the old Flåm village centre and the old church. The sparkling blue river follows the railway for large parts of the trip, and you will pass small farms in locations you’d think no one could live. The National Geographic Traveler Magazine calls the Flåm Railway one of the top 10 train journeys in Europe while in 2014, Lonely Planet went even further and called it the best train journey in the world. It is a true bucket list experience when visiting Norway, and by far one of the most popular tourist attractions.
GEIRANGER
NORWAY'S JEWEL IN THE CROWN
The Geirangerfjord is one of Norway's most visited tourist sites and has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005. Surrounded by majestic mountain peaks, steep cliffs and cascading waterfalls, the fjord extends more than 100km inland from Alesund on the west coast and also features many of the characteristic natural and cultural charms of the Norwegian fjords. The Geiranger cruise takes approximately 1 hour. Alongside the sheer mountain cliffs and the many waterfalls, you can see evidence of people who have lived and worked here in the form of many abandoned farms and shoreline smallholdings that will no doubt leave a lasting impression. There are also several spectacular viewpoints that offers impressive views and excellent photo-ops of Geiranger and Geirangerfjord. A visit to Geirangerfjord is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Norway. The UNESCO-listed fjord boasts 800m high cliffs and impressive waterfalls, such as the Seven Sisters, the Suitor and the Bridal Veil. One of the many highlights include a visit to Orneveien (the Eagle Road), where you can catch a magnificent view over the fjord itself.
BERGEN
CITY OF SEVEN MOUNTAINS
Surrounded by seven hills and seven fjords, Bergen is a lovely city with much to offer. Bryggen, the city’s historic harbour district, is notable for the preserved wooden structures lining the waterfront as it listed as UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Besides, this city is also a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, where fresh seafood is the core of Bergen cuisine. There is a lively Fish Market which has been providing the locals with freshly caught seafood since 1276. Clapperboard houses creep up the hillsides, ferries flit around the fjords, and a cluster of excellent art museums provide a welcome detour for travellers around the world. Bergen is also the Gateway to the Fjords of Norway, with easy access to nature and complete tranquillity.
